Our story
It begins with a long-term love affair with an island that ultimately becomes a home and the foundation of a business rooted in nature and community. This is our founder's story. "This rugged, remote island didn't just capture my imagination; it planted a seed that grew into The Aotea Company — a business inspired by the untamed beauty, independence, and deep sense of togetherness that defines Aotea Great Barrier."
Every item we produce reflects our island, made with sustainably sourced, wild-grown ingredients and crafted with care, integrity, and reverence for the environment. For us, business is a community journey — supported by local shareholders and Aotea mana whenua.

"We honour the place and its people, transforming local ingredients into something meant to be shared with the world — a taste of Aotea in every drop, grain, or moment'.

A life apart, lived together
Aotea has always attracted explorers, innovators, and those seeking something different. It fosters a spirit of independence, resourcefulness, and respect for the land. It is a celebration of living on the edge, the power of community, simple living, and the commitment to leave things better than we found them.
The Aotea Company recognises the deep connection between the people and the land of Aotea Great Barrier. We also acknowledge our responsibility as kaitiaki (guardians) to ensure the sustainability of our natural resources, allowing those who come after us to benefit.
We honor the mana whenua of Aotea and uphold the principles of Te Tiriti. We collaborate as kaitiaki alongside them and work to build trust as long-term business partners. Additionally, we are fortunate to support local rangatahi (youth) with education and associated costs, particularly given our distance from the mainland.
